Twenty Twenty

As we are now coming to the end of what can only be described as a pretty rubbish 2020 I thought it would be nice to look back 100 years to the days of the fabulous flappers, the 1920’s.

Sat here in my joggers and hoody typing this I am thinking about all the glamourous pictures I’ve seen of ladies in the 20’s. Many a time I have enjoyed dressing in a flapper dress for an evening do or a gangsters and moll night.

The 20’s saw the dawn of the straight-up-straight-down dress, this was perfect for the geometric patterns of the era. Straight lines, triangles and circles bought in the art deco style of the period. Pleats and tucks were also used as part of the design to enhance the look of an outfit.

I love a bit of nautical and so did the ladies, using this style for casual wear with the nautical colours styled into sailor style dresses, cardigans and sweaters. Neutral colours teamed with black were popular but colours such as red, green and orange brightened up an outfit. These colours can be seen in the famous flapper dresses of the time.

By 1924 the flapper frenzy was in full swing, the young woman made themselves look boyish and slender, the waistline dropped to really show off the straight board-like style. A flattened chest and short hair often slicked back was now the epitome of fashion. In 1925 the hemline shot up to just below the knee and sequins, feathers and fringes adorned evening wear, it really was an exciting time for women’s fashion. The women of the day were now sporty and carefree, gone were corsets, simple and elegant was the new statement. By 1929 the flapper dresses lost their sleeves and backs were also exposed, translucent material was used to make an outfit more racy.

The 20’s were a new way of living for women and with the age of the vote lowered from 30 to 21 women now had more say and also had access to better education and jobs. This was a turning point for women which would gradually increase in the decades to come.

A far cry from what 2020 is like now but I’m glad there are people out there like me who like to keep vintage alive… STAY VINTAGE
